CONANP limits five snorkelers per whale shark at a time — so we built our entire boat around that number. Most operators fill every seat they can sell. We don't. Maximum 10 guests on The Hook. Every guest goes multiple times. No waiting on a crowded deck for your turn.
You slip into the water. And then — a shadow the size of a school bus glides beneath you. Whale sharks are the largest fish on earth and La Paz Bay is one of the only places in the world where you can reliably swim alongside them in the wild.
The buses from Cabo carry forty people and a microphone. We carry ten people and a marine biologist. CONANP limits five snorkelers in the water at a time — that's the same rule for every boat in La Paz. What's different is how many people are waiting on deck for their turn. With 20+ guests, you get one short rotation. With a maximum of 10 on The Hook, every guest goes multiple times, unhurried.
No touching. No chasing. No zoo. Just you, the water, and one of the most magnificent creatures on the planet.
Final times are subject to confirmation as all permitted vessel schedules are determined by the local authorities and announced the day before the activity. We manage all permitting on your behalf and will contact you with your confirmed time the evening prior.
Reserve your date online. We submit our permit request to SEMARNAT — our standard requested time is 12 noon and we have an excellent record of securing it. During peak season, authorities may occasionally adjust departure times. We will notify you of any schedule adjustments.
Your marine biologist guide briefs you on whale shark behavior, snorkel technique, and all regulations before boarding.
Before entering the Whale Shark Zone, we check in with the SEMARNAT authority station and receive official authorization to enter. Every vessel is required to do this — no exceptions.
Your guide enters the water with you in groups of 3–4. Wild, free, and completely unhurried. Every guest goes multiple times.
Whale sharks eat only plankton, tiny fish, and fish eggs. Completely harmless to humans.
La Paz Bay offers one of the most reliable whale shark aggregations in the world from November through April.
Whale sharks are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The Hook follows strict SEMARNAT guidelines on every tour.

Every tour is led by a certified marine biologist. Our guides contribute to ongoing research on the La Paz whale shark population. We never chase animals.
To protect the whale sharks, all operators are equally limited to 2 hours in the zone with a maximum of 5 in the water at one time. That regulation applies to every boat in La Paz. What differs is how many guests are waiting on the boat. With 20+ guests you get one short rotation. With a maximum of 10 on The Hook boats, every guest gets double the time alongside the animal. The regulation exists for them. The small group exists for you.
The whale sharks in La Paz Bay are completely wild and free. We never use bait or feeding to attract them. Every encounter is natural.
Our guides document each encounter — photographing fin patterns for individual identification and contributing data to the global whale shark research network.
Whale sharks are present in La Paz Bay from November through April, with peak season December through March. La Paz Bay is one of the most reliable whale shark destinations on earth — encounters are consistent throughout the season rather than dependent on migration timing. The Hook accepts reservations for the full season from November through the last day of April.
All whale shark tours in La Paz Bay operate under CONANP (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas) — Mexico's federal protected areas authority. CONANP controls daily boat quotas and assigns zone access slots to each permitted operator. We receive the official schedule the afternoon before your tour date and confirm your exact departure time via WhatsApp that evening. During peak season (December–February) times can shift day to day. We monitor every schedule change and communicate immediately.
Yes — La Paz is one of the most regulated whale shark destinations in the world. CONANP limits boats simultaneously, restricts time to 2 hours per vessel, and mandates that only 5 snorkelers plus one certified guide enter the water at once. The Hook requires biodegradable sunscreen only, prohibits touching or chasing, maintains a minimum 3-meter distance, and our marine biologist guides contribute individual identification data to global whale shark research databases.
Whale sharks aggregate in La Paz Bay — not near Cabo San Lucas. Cabo-based operators bus 40+ tourists to La Paz, charge $250–$300 USD with significant markup, and run the same CONANP-regulated experience at double the price. The Hook is the direct La Paz local operator: max 10 guests, from $145 USD, certified marine biologist guide, no middleman, no bus. The whale sharks are here. We are here. Book direct.
Groups fill fast during peak season. Book early to secure your preferred date. Maximum 10 guests on The Hook boat — every departure is intimate and expert-led. Collective options available for those who prefer to join a group.
