Safari Norte

Baja's Wildest
Ocean Encounters.

Departing at 7:30am from the La Paz Malecón on The Hook's own boat, Safari Norte is the most exclusive marine wildlife experience in Baja California Sur. Maximum 6 guests. Your guide in the water with you. Every encounter intimate, unhurried, and completely wild.

The route heads north through the Bay of La Paz — past Isla Gaviota, past Balandra and El Hongo, into the open Sea of Cortez where we explore the waters from La Reina to El Saltito — searching for whatever the sea offers that day.

🐦 The Galapagos Is Further Than You Think

Most people believe you need to fly to the Galapagos to see Blue-footed Boobies. Isla Gaviota is 20 minutes from the Malecón. Home to a colony of approximately 5,000 birds — one of the largest Blue-footed Booby rookeries outside the Galapagos. As you approach the island appears to have just snowed. It hasn't. That's birds.

7:30am — Meet at The Hook

Check in at The Hook on the Malecón. Equipment fitting, safety briefing, early departure ahead of any other boats. The sea is calmest at first light.

2

Isla Gaviota — Blue-footed Boobies

First stop heading north — the island locals call "Boobie Island." 5,000 Blue-footed Boobies nesting on a single rock in the Sea of Cortez. Most people fly to the Galapagos for this.

3

Balandra — El Hongo

A 15-minute stop at Mexico's most beautiful beach. Early morning — no crowds, no other boats. The famous mushroom rock — El Hongo — rising from the turquoise shallows. Then the open sea awaits.

4

Open Sea — La Reina to El Saltito

We explore the northern Cerralvo Channel — searching for whatever the sea offers. Orca pods, Mobula rays, Humpback and Sperm whales, dolphins, sea lions, giant mantas. Your guide reads the water. All 6 of you in the water for every encounter.

5

Beach Lunch

Fresh ceviche on a secluded beach. The Sea of Cortez in every direction. No other boats. Just your group and the wild ocean.

6

Return to La Paz

Back to the Malecón by early afternoon. Walk into The Hook Bar & Mercado Turistico. Tell everyone what you just saw. They won't believe you.

🎯 Why Maximum 6 Guests

Safari Norte runs with a strict maximum of 6 guests. Not for capacity reasons — for experience reasons. Six people means everyone enters the water for every encounter. No waiting on the boat. All of you inside every moment.

Our Commitment

Conservation First. Always.

🌊 The Northern Cerralvo Channel — Where We Operate

Safari Norte explores the waters of the northern Isla Cerralvo area — from La Reina to El Saltito. This stretch of the Cerralvo Channel is one of the most biologically rich corridors in the entire Sea of Cortez. A massive underwater canyon drops to over 600 meters within a mile — pushing nutrient-rich cold water to the surface and drawing in every species of marine megafauna in the region.

Orcas are not uncommon in these waters. They are regularly sighted hunting Mobula rays in the channel between La Ventana and the northern tip of Cerralvo. The Hook Experiences follows all official SEMARNAT regulations for every wildlife encounter on Safari Norte.

🔬

Certified Guides

Every Hook guide is fully certified in marine wildlife interaction. We never chase animals. We position respectfully and let the wildlife decide every encounter.

🐟

Mobula Ray Protection

Mexico banned Mobula ray fishing in 2007. Schools have since grown from hundreds to tens of thousands. We never disrupt feeding or schooling behavior.

🦭

La Reina Sea Lion Colony

La Reina — the rocky islet at the northern tip of Cerralvo — hosts a resident California sea lion colony. We approach slowly, enter calmly. No chasing, no touching.

🌊

UNESCO World Heritage Waters

Isla Cerralvo and the Gulf of California islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every Safari Norte operates within these protections.

Safari Norte FAQ

Your Questions Answered

What are Mobulas and will we see them?+
Mobulas (Munk's Devil Rays — Mobula munkiana) are acrobatic rays that gather in schools of tens of thousands in the Sea of Cortez. When we find them you go in — swimming inside a school of thousands of Mobulas is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on earth. Peak season is March through June and November through January, but Mobulas are encountered year-round on Safari Norte.
Is wildlife guaranteed on Safari Norte?+
Wildlife is wild — that is the entire point of Safari Norte. Mobulas, dolphins, and sea lions are encountered on the vast majority of departures. Orcas, whales, and giant mantas are not uncommon but cannot be guaranteed. What we guarantee is an expert guide, the right waters, and maximum 6 guests in the water for every encounter.
What is the best time of year for Safari Norte?+
Every season offers something extraordinary. March through June brings peak Mobula aggregations in the thousands and orca sightings. Winter brings Humpback and Sperm whales. Summer brings giant mantas to La Reina. There is no bad time — just different wildlife.
Why only 6 guests?+
Six guests is an experience decision. With 6 people everyone enters the water for every encounter. No waiting on the boat. No taking turns. Every guest gets the full encounter. Private boat available for group bookings — contact us to arrange.
Do I need snorkeling or swimming experience?+
Safari Norte is rated moderate. You must be a confident swimmer comfortable in open ocean conditions. This is an 8-hour active day on the water. If you are unsure contact us and we will be honest about whether it's a good fit.
Will we see orcas?+
Orcas are not uncommon in the northern Cerralvo Channel — regularly sighted hunting Mobulas in spring. We cannot guarantee an encounter but conditions make sightings more likely than almost anywhere else in Baja. The Hook follows all SEMARNAT regulations for every wildlife encounter.
Where does Safari Norte depart from?+
Safari Norte departs at 7:30am directly from The Hook on the La Paz Malecón. No transport to La Ventana required. Meet us at the shop for check-in and equipment fitting.
